Thanks to Anders and Gunnel Kull for the translation. The entire letter reads:

"Dear Mathilda and little Lovisa!
"Although Erik's death for us is very painful, we realize that it must be even more difficult for you. God give you the grace to bear your sorrow with meekness. We have received a very comforting letter from Pastor Kraft. If Erik has gone home to our righteous Father, we who survive him need not mourn as others which have no hope [see 1 Thess. 4:13]. It must be very difficult for you now, but even though it appears dark, be sure that even the darkest night is followed by the light of day, as long as you do not forget the guiding star.
"I am writing only briefly this time, but both us old people wish to still consider you as a dear daughter, even though Erik is gone, and that you may write to us about your little Lovisa. Give us the address. You may have already received a letter from Lennart. Laura sends her sisterly greeting!
"The most heartfelt greetings to you, dear daughter, and to our little granddaughter.
"Yours affectionately,
"J. Thorin

"Did Erik receive my letter of December 30?"
